Ultimate Guide to Outdoor And Indoor Dog Potty Solutions

indoor dog potty

Figuring out how to make sure your dog can get out to go potty regularly is one of the main issues people have before adopting a new canine family member. Luckily, there are many indoor dog potty solutions available today to help with this problem.

If you’re lucky enough to have a balcony, patio, or backyard there are also great outdoor dog potty solutions to help your best friend get some relief.

This ultimate guide will cover four of the most common concerns dog owners have regarding dog elimination, as well as solutions: indoor dog potty solutions, how to get your dog to tell you they need to go out, how they can get outside themselves, and outdoor dog potty solutions.

No matter what your budget is you can find the right product for your pup.

Let’s start out by looking at some questions dog owners who are new to indoor dog potties frequently have.

Frequently Asked Questions About Indoor Dog Potties

If my dog has an indoor dog potty do I still need to take it for a walk?

Yes! Even though you have an indoor area for your dog to relieve itself, taking your pup on at least one walk a day is essential. Walking provides physical exercise, mental stimulation, exposure to new people and sounds, sniffing opportunities, and time to bond with you as a team.

Depending on the breed and age of your dog, it’s generally recommended that you walk your dog at least 1-2 times per day for 20-30 minutes each time. Dogs who don’t get enough outdoor exercise time often get destructive and chew on inappropriate items in the house in an attempt to alleviate boredom and pent up energy.

If you can’t be home to take your dog out very much on certain days, consider hiring a dog walker or taking your pup to doggy daycare to help them get exercise, socialize, and have the chance to go potty outside.

You should also give your dog opportunities to go to the bathroom outside as much as possible and not just rely on indoor facilities when you’re home.

Are there indoor potty solutions for large dogs?

Most of the indoor dog potty solutions are geared towards smaller dogs of around 25 pounds or less. However, artificial grass, DoggieLawn real grass, Fresh Patch grass, PetSafe Pet Loo Portable Indoor/Outdoor Dog Potty, and washable or disposable pee pads are options for large dogs.

Why would anyone want an indoor dog potty?

There are many reasons why an indoor area for a dog potty is a good idea:
–You work outside your home and can’t always go back to let your dog out during the day or can’t get home at the same time every night.
–Your pup is older and can’t hold their bladder all day.
–You have a senior dog with arthritis that makes going up and down stairs to the lawn painful and difficult
–You have a small dog who doesn’t like going out in rainy, snowy, or very cold weather.
–You have a male dog who marks inside the house and needs a place to mark safely without ruining your furniture or carpet.
–You live in a high rise, apartment, or condo where it would be difficult to take your dog out to go potty at night
–Your dog has a medical condition or is on medication that causes them to go to the bathroom more often than usual.

Potty pads are a classic solution for many dog owners, not just those house training a puppy. Dog owners in apartments without easy access to an outdoor potty space for their dog, or owners with small dogs who don’t like going out in the elements, have used potty pads for much of their pup’s bathroom needs.

Piddle Pole Puppy Pee Pads

This Piddle Pole is a unique product that can also help with male leg lifting in the home.

If you have a male dog who you’ve potty trained on pee pads but still likes to lift his leg in inappropriate areas this is a product that can help.

If I were using this product, I would put it near a wall with a pee pad against the wall behind it since male dogs don’t always hit the target as intended.

  • Is made in the USA
  • Can protect furniture and walls by proving a post for male dogs to mark instead

Pop Up Pee Pad

This product works on the same principle as the Piddle Pole – giving your male dog a target to pee on in the house instead of your furniture or walls.

The back story is interesting and one pet parents can relate to. Rocky & Maggie’s Pet Products is a small disabled-owned, Florida-based business. One of the owners came up with this idea when his dog Rocky wouldn’t stop peeing on the chair leg in his home, and the pop up pad was the solution.

How To Get Your Dog To Let You Know They Need To Go Out

If you would prefer to take your dog out to go potty, how do you know when they need to go out?

It’s actually really easy to train your dog to ring potty bells or a dog door bell to let you know! Let’s check out these items next.

2 Pack Dog Potty Bells Doorbells

Using potty bells is a good, inexpensive way to train your dog to let you know they need to go outside. We used them with two of our puppies and they worked really well.

The trick for using potty bells is to make sure your pup understands they are for going out to go potty only, not every five minutes to play!

This 2 pack of bells in nice so you can have one on your front and back doors, or to take one when you travel. They’re made from heavy-duty nylon to hold up to your dog constantly licking or pawing them.

It’s really easy to do dog potty bell training using a system like this:

How To Train Your Dog To Use Potty Bells

  1. Hang the bells on the doorknob or on a hook near the door. Make sure your pup can reach them easily. It’s a good idea to put a scratch shield (basically a clear plastic sheet) on the door or wall to protect it from dog drool or claw marks.
  2. Tell the dog your verbal cue, like “let’s go potty!”, and jingle the bell yourself. Go out with your dog on leash and walk them around until they go. Praise (good girl went potty!) and treat them and go back in the house. If your dog doesn’t go after a few minutes, go back inside and wait half an hour and try it again.
  3. Give your cue, take a treat and place it right by the bell so your dog will jingle the bell when their nose hits it. Or put a dab of peanut butter on the bell for your dog to lick off. Some people prefer to teach their dog to paw the bell instead of jingling it with their nose. Repeat the cue, go outside immediately, and back in as soon as they’re done.
  4. After you do this a few times your dog will catch on. They will also try to ring the bell repeatedly to go out and play, but stand firm! Even if you have a fenced in back yard go out on a leash, walk until they go potty, and back inside.

VIMOV Pet Training Bells, Set of 2

These bells work on the same principle as the hanging potty bells but sit on the floor. Your dog hits the bell with his paw to make it ring.

The bells are waterproof and have a wide, flat button for your pup to hit.

If you’re looking for something a little more sleek and modern then set of 2 wireless doggie doorbells may be the answer for you.

Outdoor Dog Potty Solutions

If you are lucky enough to have an outdoor yard for your dog you may still not want all your grass ruined by dog pee. If you have kids who play in the backyard or do entertaining you don’t want to look at big yellow patches of grass all the time.

Why does dog urine turn grass yellow? Dog urine is rich in nitrogen which kills the grass when concentrated amounts are applied over time by chemically burning it.

That’s why the lawn fertilizer you use that contains nitrogen makes it green and lush, and your dog kills the grass – fertilizer contains much smaller quantities of nitrogen and isn’t poured on the grass repeatedly like dog urine.

One easy solution to save your lawn is to set up a specific outdoor dog potty area in a side yard or less obvious area of the yard.

Creating An Outdoor Dog Potty Area

  • Choose what you want to use as a base. Artificial grass, pea gravel, and landscape bark are all popular choices that can easily be hosed down to decrease odor.
  • If you have a dog door, set up a fenced area using a portable fence so the only place your dog can go is out the door and into the fenced area.
  • If you have a male dog provide something like the fire hydrant pee post described below to give them a target to pee on.
  • Try spraying the area with a product to attract your dog to the area like NaturVet Potty Here Training Spray
  • Take your dog on a leash to the area each time you want them to go, give a cue like “let’s go potty!”
  • If your dog goes praise them and offer high value treats they love
  • If they poop on another part of the lawn you can relocate it to the potty area and take them there to sniff the next time you want them to go

Now let’s take a look at some of the products that can help you set up your own outdoor dog potty area.

Fire Hydrant Dog Pee Post

Okay, are you laughing at me yet? Well don’t, because I know from LOTS of dog mom experience with male dogs that they like to pee on tall stuff. Specifically mail boxes and hydrants. So also feel free to put a mailbox in your backyard. 🙂

This hydrant can work to help keep your entire backyard from being peed on by training your dog to go on or near an area you designate as “the potty area”.

Outdoor Dog Potty Fence

A portable but sturdy fence like the Giantex model here can make a really nice dog potty area if you have any access to a ground level patio or backyard.

It’s a great solution if you rent, can’t install a permanent fence, and want to be able to take your fence with you. If you have a dog door installed in your sliding patio door, this fence, and some artificial grass, real grass, gravel, or bark you’re all set with a great outdoor dog potty solution.

Pee Smell Odor Eliminators / Removers

Rocco & Roxie Stain and Odor Eliminator

Despite our best efforts, dog accidents will still occur in the house. Rocco & Roxie Stain and Odor Eliminator is what we use at our house with great success.

And this coming from a dog mom of three and cat mom of two 🙂

I’m a huge believer in enzyme based odor eliminators. The way it works is the bio-enzymatic formula goes to work releasing active bacteria that feed on ammonia residue left behind in pet urine and other organic materials to actually eliminate them.

This really helps if you have a dog (or cat) who keeps marking in the same spot because it helps eliminate the odor so they aren’t drawn back to it. At least hopefully not, but our furry friends do seems to have great noses for sniffing out pee spots again. Sigh.

Anyway, some of the features of Rocco & Roxie are:

  • Eliminates odors and most stains (I’m still looking for a perfect “cat puke on the carpeting” stain remover that works the first time)
  • Enzyme activated to remove the odors of urine, feces, or vomit instead of just covering it up
  • Certified gentle and safe for pets and kids, chlorine-free, color-safe, safe for all carpets
  • Can be used on carpets, floors, furniture, clothing, litter boxes, kennels, carriers, sleeping areas
  • 100% refund guarantee

Simple Green Outdoor Odor Eliminator for Pets, Dogs, Ideal for Artificial Grass & Patio

If you have an outdoor area set up for your puppy potty, then this Simple Green Outdoor Odor Eliminator for artificial grass and patio is a good solution to cleaning up smells.

This odor eliminator:

  • Quickly removes odors left behind by urine, stool, vomit and other organic matter
  • Is safe for use on grass, artificial turf, gravel, concrete, brick and more
  • Uses powerful, natural enzymes to eliminate odors at the source rather than cover them up
  • Orally non-toxic formula is safer for use around pets
  • Ideal for patios, decks, dog runs, and yards
